The Adventure Park at Sandy River Retreat

If you are looking for a fun, challenging, personal growth or team building activity, I highly recommend the Adventure Park at Sandy River Retreat in Farmville, VA.  With 61 obstacles and 17 zip lines, this adventure park is a great adrenaline rush.  There are courses set up for the wimps (I mean first timers), the intermediates, and the crazy ones (rather, those who are sure footed and out of their minds).

I thought it would be a fun exercise for my husband and I to go through this course together.  We arrived (late) for our 2:30 session, got our harnesses and gloves,  and were taken to a training section of the park.  There Will and Chris covered how to use the equipment and ran us through a test course.

Then it was time for the fun to begin.  We headed to the main platform and jumped in.  In the interest of full disclosure, I will admit that I am terrified of heights and have had 3 abdominal surgeries in 2 years (what core muscles?).  I had to stick to the wimpy course…and that took us over an hour to navigate the first time through.

I have to say that the staff is wonderful.  They go out of their way to make sure everyone is having a great time.  I was supposed to cross a 20 foot tightrope and said thank, but no thanks (those blasted, absent, core muscles), and they helped me back to another course.  They were encouraging when I gripped the trees instead of jumping off a perfectly good platform to zipline. And they talked us through the obstacles if we were stuck.

It was a fantastic experience.  I overcame my fear of heights with my extremely patient, extreme sports minded, husband.

If you have a morning or an afternoon free, and want a wonderful adventure, head on over to the Adventure Park at Sandy River Retreat.
