It’s full of tchotchkes, and is certainly pink. It’s a Southern twist on the the traditional diner. It is the Pink Cadillac Diner in Natural Bridge, Virginia.
The Pink Cadillac began in Greenville, VA, back when I was in high school. It has since moved a bit further south down Route 11. The restaurant has three separate dining areas, one of which resembles an old soda fountain counter (my son really enjoyed the ice cream selections!).
The ambiance is great. There are a lot of really great knick knacks, posters, juke boxes, etc. You can spend hours just looking. I also like the pink and teal motif.
As I mentioned above, it’s a Southern Diner. Choices include meatloaf, country fried steak, and chicken platters, along with burgers, fries, hot dogs and chili (plus much, much more). We ordered 2 sandwiches, 2 bowls of soup, a large chefs salad and an order of onion rings. The onion rings were fabulous! The chef salad was heavy on cheese and the ranch dressing was yummy. And, to be blunt, I’d just avoid the french onion soup.
We were seated right next to the servers’ drink station, so we had a unique glimpse into the “backstage”. Having worked in a restaurant for many, many years, I would have a few suggestions to include, assigning servers to stations. The servers were frequently asking if table B6 had been taken care of, or E12. Plus, everything was out in the open. So we got to observe how they handle drinks right after bussing tables. I think being so close to the stress of the team impacted the overall experience.
Overall, it’s one of those places that is fun to experience, once. If you don’t go in with high expectations, you won’t be disappointed. If you are on a diet, you have limited options. Stop in, grab an ice cream and soda, and enjoy the ambiance.
